Let’s Chat : Command Centers

Are they a thing of the past, or are they still something homeowners want in their home?

Command centers are definitely a convenient feature in a home, but not totally necessary if you’re the type of person who will always put your belongings in their home. Well, I’m here today to let you know that I am ABSOLUTELY not one of those people who always puts my things away. I’m a stuffer of objects, and hoarder of mail that I don’t open for weeks (…okay, maybe months…).

Ever since moving into the house I grew up in, I have been able to stay on top of clutter with simple organizing each week after I’ve left things pile up. One thing I really love about our house is the built-in command center in the kitchen. While going through a kitchen remodel many years ago, my dad created a built-in command center between two studs. The command center is conveniently located in the kitchen right where you come into the house.

What I love about it are these features :

  1. The convenient drawer for storage of cords, phone books (people still use these?!), or what-have-you.
  2. The back wall of the command center is made out of cork – perfectly convenient for personalizing the space with small artwork or pictures and postcards.
  3. The ability to set items like keys, small canisters, and a mail organizer on it.

This set up works really well for my husband and I. We are able to come home and set our keys on the command center so that we always know where to find them in a mad-dash out of the house in the mornings. My husband always has pens or pencils in his pockets, so having the votive is a perfect spot to store all of those. And while the kitchen table is the first stop for our mail, I definitely like to transfer it to the black “mail” holder. (I received the “farm sweet farm” from a sweet friend, found the mail holder at Target, and was gifted the mercury gold votive.) And since the command center is not perfectly centered on the wall, I wanted to create some harmony by adding in the “home” sign, and the homemade picture frame I made a year ago with our wedding picture. In my opinion, this really personalized the wall and makes it feel homier.

While I can say our command center is not always clutter-free, it definitely helps in keeping items in a convenient location. Do you have a command center in your home? What do you love about it? What would you change about it?
